The current Bowling firepower with India
A look at some of the key bowlers for India. Their performances during the last couple of years (2018 onwards) have been the key reason for India’s successes at the test level. I doubt that there was any time in history when India had a more potent attack. Of the 5, Ashwin has been the biggest long term performer, going for around 25 runs per wicket. For long the others were lagging, and it’s only recently that they have brought their performance to his levels. He himself seems to have dropped off a bit, but not much.
Shami and Sharma have been tremendous during the last two years. Shami had a shorter legacy of mediocrity whereas Sharma has such a long history of mediocrity that it is doubtful that he will ever get his test average down to under 30. However, the last three years of his career have been absolutely outstanding.
The big strides, almost unnoticed (or at least less noticed) have been taken by Jadeja. Bumrah has been the catalyst, and he has no legacy burden either
note - progressive averages track the career averages as the career progresses, innings by innings. In general, a career average of 24 or below is outstanding (meaning that he is among the all-time greats) for a fast bowler and 24-27 is world-class (meaning he could make it into any international side of his generation). The corresponding benchmarks for spin bowlers would be 27 & below and 27-30. These are not international benchmarks. Just my opinion, based on historical data.
These bowlers stack up very well with all the Indian bowlers in history at an individual level alone. The top bowlers in India's history are also given below. The top 5 by averages are current players, and Ishant Sharma ranks only 22nd on the list.
Why are averages important? If you are trying to win a match, you are trying to get the opponents out consistently under 250. If your key bowlers are averaging high (the support bowlers are bound to be averaging even higher), you will concede more runs than you can score (on an average).
